Unity Park

Washington, DC

The restoration of historic Unity Park in Washington, DC involved retaining the existing trees, fountain and sculpture and adding flexible open space as JHLA worked with the adjacent Line Hotel developers, DC DPR, and the community to restore and activate the neighborhood gem. The .15 acre urban park features the historic sculpture/fountain “Carry the Rainbow on Your Shoulders” by Jerome Meadows. A stylized tree of life paving pattern was developed, informed by the original park concept of Unity in Diversity, and depicts tree roots working together to unify a diverse community and represent world harmony. Permeable paving creates this pattern and provides optimal planting environment for existing trees. Circular tree benches limit intrusion into the small park area, retaining precious open space for community festivals, functions and a farmers’ market.
