Harvest Home US DOE Solar Decathlon
Irvine, CA
Harvest Home, a US DOE Solar Decathlon student entry from Catholic, GW and American Universities, featured an affordable zero-energy house harvesting sun, water and wind in a design that nurtures the environment and the human spirit and promotes experiential healing for a military veteran battling physical and emotional trauma. Each element of the design concept, ‘Healing through Harvest,’ reflects a deep commitment to creating connections to the healing power of family, community, and earth.
The holistic and ecologically focused design approach represents the synergy between landscape and architecture in energy efficient design, and advocates that the future of sustainable residential landscape design lies in the fusion of function, aesthetics, and regenerative ecological principles to support the well-being of future generations and our planet.
Harvest Home was designed for the hot and arid climate in Irvine, CA, where the Solar Decathlon was held. The home was donated to the non-profit Wounded Warrior Homes in San Diego. The project won a National Student ASLA Award of Excellence.
