Dewey Local Park

Wheaton, MD

JHLA led an interdisciplinary renovation of Dewey Local Park in Wheaton, MD, transforming existing tennis and basketball courts atop a 20' stormwater vault into a vibrant, multi-generational destination. New amenities across the 36,000 SF roof deck include a dog park, adult fitness area, two shade structures, and a regulation street hockey/futsal court donated by the Washington Capitals — all requiring careful detailing to protect the underlying slab.

The 19,000 SF dog park features synthetic turf mounds over a lightweight stalite gravel base, with shade structures engineered to engage the concrete beam structure below. The renovated playground leverages natural topography with a hill slide, rope/bridge circuit, and a connected trail linking to an age-appropriate play area for younger children. A picnic pavilion, dynamic court graphics, mini track, site furnishings, and lighting complete the design.

The project also included two parking lot expansions, new stormwater management facilities meeting Maryland standards, and accessible improvements to the adjacent Rock Creek Trail. JHLA provided full design services from Concept through Construction Administration over five years.  2022 POASLA Merit Award Winner.
