COOLIDGE HIGH SCHOOL/IDA B. WELLS MIDDLE SCHOOL
Washington, DC
A highlight of the landscape design for LEED Gold Coolidge High School is the restoration of the existing greenhouse and new community garden, built in 2010 through a collaborative public/private partnership among the ASLA, Coolidge ACE Mentoring Program, Coolidge Alumni Association and the neighboring community. The garden provides a venue for environmental education and is planted with native pollinator plant species in large bio retention areas. Original materials are reused in the planter walls, and concrete pavers plants and a large metal arbor are repurposed elsewhere on site. Also on the property, a circular outdoor classroom offers amphitheater seating around a sheltered, paved stage adjacent to the school vegetable garden. and covered bike parking. Other sustainable elements include permeable paving and shade trees for solar shading. DC’s Casey Trees donated over 100 native trees which are planted in a forestation effort designed by JHLA around the Coolidge campus. JHLA designed the project from master plan concept through CD and provided CA services.
